GPUvm: Why Not Virtualizing GPUs at the Hypervisor?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Graphics processing units (GPUs) provide orders-ofmagnitude speedup for compute-intensive data-parallel applications. However, enterprise and cloud computing domains, where resource isolation of multiple clients is required, have poor access to GPU technology. This is due to lack of operating system (OS) support for virtualizing GPUs in a reliable manner. To make GPUs more mature system citizens, we present an open architecture of GPU virtualization with a particular emphasis on the Xen hypervisor. We provide design and implementation of fulland para-virtualization, including optimization techniques to reduce overhead of GPU virtualization. Our detailed experiments using a relevant commodity GPU show that the optimized performance of GPU para-virtualization is yet two or three times slower than that of pass-through and native approaches, whereas full-virtualization exhibits a different scale of overhead due to increased memory-mapped I/O operations. We also demonstrate that coarse-grained fairness on GPU resources among multiple virtual machines can be achieved by GPU scheduling; finer-grained fairness needs further architectural support by the nature of non-preemptive GPU workload.

Full Virtualization for GPUs Reconsidered
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have become the tool choice in computationally demanding fields such as scientific computing and machine learning. However, supporting GPUs in virtualized settings like the cloud remains a challenge due to limited hardware support for virtualization. In practice, cloud providers elide GPU support entirely or resort to compromise techniques such as PCI pass throu...
متن کاملScalable I/O Virtualization via Self-Virtualizing Devices
The virtualization of I/O devices is an integral part of system virtualization. This includes both virtualizing the physical devices and managing them across multiple guest virtual machines (VMs) or domains running on top of a virtual machine monitor (VMM) or hypervisor (HV). This paper presents the notion of self-virtualizing devices, where for higher end, ‘smart’ I/O devices, selected virtual...

The goal of this project is to develop a minimal trusted computing base for virtualizing (multiple instances of different) distrusted legacy operating systems in a secure way. With the resulting system it shall be possible to use, for instance, Word on Microsoft Windows for composing classified documents in a se...
متن کاملOS Support for Virtualizing Hardware Transactional Memory
Transactional memory promises to simplify multithreaded programming. Hardware TM (HTM) implementations promise better performance by augmenting processors with transactional state. However, HTMs interact poorly with the operating system or virtual machine monitor. For example, they often do not tolerate OS actions that virtualize processors and memory, such as context switching and paging. With...
متن کاملTaming Hosted Hypervisors with (Mostly) Deprivileged Execution
Recent years have witnessed increased adoption of hosted hypervisors in virtualized computer systems. By non-intrusively extending commodity OSs, hosted hypervisors can effectively take advantage of a variety of mature and stable features as well as the existing broad user base of commodity OSs. However, virtualizing a computer system is still a rather complex task. As a result, existing hosted...
